||Please join us for a special all-day Sacred Harp singing! We'll be singing in the historic Rumsey Town Hall in Capay Valley, about an hour northwest of Davis/Sacramento. We'll sing from the 1991 Sacred Harp (Denson revision) and have loaner books available. No experience is necessary, and all are welcome. This event is FREE, donations accepted.
We'll have dinner on the grounds (potluck-style) around noon. The hall has parking and is ADA accessible.
Sacred Harp or shape note singing is an a cappella American hymn singing tradition that began in 18th-century New England and continued in the rural south in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the second half of the 20th century, the tradition began to blossom around the rest of the country again. Today there are singings across the country and in many other countries. It is a participatory tradition with no one leader and no audition requirements. If you desire to sing Sacred Harp, you are welcome to join us. Sacred Harp is not a performance-oriented tradition. We sit in a hollow square, facing each other, and sing with great gusto for ourselves and each other. For those of us who are religious, it can be a form of worship and prayer as well. The words are Christian, but singers of any religion or no religion are warmly invited to join us. We will have books for you to borrow and will gladly help you get started if you are new to this type of singing.
